There are a lot of institutes, academy offering professional make up courses and the price ranges from RM300 a day to RM5000 for the whole course. In this blog we will identify what you are paying mostly and how you can be part of this exciting industry.
Of course I am sharing on my personal experience in Malaysian industry. Some of the more expensive courses offer ‘recognized’ certs by so call this and that but then seriously, unless you are planning to go work overseas, most of the certs are worthless here. Simply because when you apply for a job, you show your portfolio and if you have build your portfolio well by making up celebrities or recognized models, your credibility will be much more.
So do weight whether you are paying something useful in practical in your working place or simply paying for a cert.
Now in this industry, most of the teaching/trainers are brought down. Meaning if you graduated from a school you can open up your academy and start your own make up training school. That is why the price is not standard and there is no official system to grade/value your skills.
Also sometimes when you approach an academy, they will try to sell you lots of package, so do understand and compare what you are paying for. Certain tools are necessary and make up set but as customer it is your right to choose and buy what you need only.
Do not be duped (cheated) to invest lots of money to buy the cosmetic products too. There is no such thing as a single best brand in the market, each brand has their own strength. So be in charge, you as customer will allow them to recommend but not necessary be force upon to buy the whole package.
Finally in Malaysia, there is a program called SLDN Sistem Latihan Dual National or in English NATIONAL DUAL TRAINING SYSTEM (NDTS). This is government sponsored program where you can get paid to study professional beauty course. You can get paid up to RM300 monthly for the duration of the course. Each student also will get a cert from the ministry to show that you have completed this course.
There are lot of agencies who promises this well sought cert but they will only give it to you after you have spent thousands of ringgit. Do make sure you do not get duped into extending your course to get this cert. Make sure you know your rights, and make sure the academy is a certified SLDN provider by Malaysia Government.

This in my opinion is very useful for the future, as today Government is trying to streamline the education for make up and beauty centres. So in the future, more privileges will be given to those with local certified certs and I believe in a couple of years time, all beauty centres will have to get the ministry approval to operate training/beauty schools.
